Osterman Research and Quantum Leap Marketing, our marketing partner for Webinars, recently conducted an e-mail policy management Webinar sponsored by EMC, MessageOne and Symantec. We had a great discussion and uncovered some interesting insights about what organizations need to at least consider in the context of managing policies focused on messaging:

* Messaging policy management is really all about a holistic view of messaging management, including e-mail, instant messaging, inbound content scanning, outbound content scanning, encryption, archiving, complying with regulatory obligations and e-discovery obligations, etc.

* Most organizations’ messaging policies are inadequate to meet all of its needs, particularly in light of the fact that e-mail and other messaging systems are so central to the way companies do business.

* Employee training is useful for assisting an organization with messaging policy compliance, but automated systems are twice as effective in ensuring that policies are followed.

* As MessageOne pointed out, e-mail policy is really at the core of any organization’s messaging policy system and the hub around which everything else related to messaging management revolves.

* Symantec’s focus is to view messaging policy management holistically. Stated simply, their focus is on maintaining system reliability, driving as much cost as possible out of messaging, preventing bad stuff from coming in, retaining critical data for as long as necessary and being able to mine the message store for needed content.

* EMC’s focus is that the core of a truly useful messaging policy management begins with effective, reliable and inexpensive storage. Osterman Research has found in several different studies that storage-related issues are the leading problem for messaging managers.
