We all know the drill. A new technology emerges and – if its marketing push is successful – the industry goes into buzz mode about it. You read about it, looking for signs this young technology is ready to be taken seriously. It’s a balancing act: You don’t want to waste energy exploring go-nowhere wares, but you don’t want to lag behind in deploying technologies that do prove themselves of great value – especially if your company’s competitors are among the early adopters.
Take virtualization, for example. A few years ago, a little company called VMware began pushing the idea of server virtualization and how it would stop server sprawl and save money. At the time, most people had never heard of the concept. Fast-forward to today, however, and that novel idea is the technology du jour: Scads of enterprises have virtualized servers, and the earliest adopters are smiling. Not only have they been enjoying huge cost savings longer than the rest of the market, but they also have become so adept at virtualization they’ve moved on to next-generation forms of it, applying the concept to their application servers, desktops, databases and so on.
Maybe you are among this savvy crowd. Or maybe I’m totally off-base and you don’t give a hoot about virtualization of any sort. Instead, you’ve been getting your company ready for a big convergence push or an RFID system or a meshed-wireless rollout. Given the vibrancy of the IT market, any number of advanced technologies could have snagged your attention and your budget, and boosted your business.

Where do you stand on VoIP, Web services, MPLS, network access control and grid computing? Maybe a technology is deployed less fully than you thought it would be by now and isn’t really worth your while after all.
