High Tech Computer, the world’s largest maker of smart phones that use Microsoft software, began supplying High Speed Downlink Packet Access smart phones to Softbank in Japan on Thursday.
The deal is the second major design launch in Japan for the Taiwanese company. In July, HTC started supplying a Windows Mobile-based smart phone with NTT DoCoMo.
HTC’s new Softbank X01HT features multiple ways for users to access high-speed Internet data, HTC says. HSDPA allows data transfer rates of up to 1.8Mbps, and uploads of 384Kbps, faster than Wideband Code Division Multiple Access. Users can also access wireless LAN hot spots using the handset.
The smart phone runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 and has the Microsoft Office suite, as well as Explorer Mobile. The qwerty keyboard allows users to input data or play music on Windows Media Player. In the near future, the users will be able to use a push e-mail service, running on Microsoft Exchange Push E-Mail technology.
The handset is also wired with Bluetooth technology, and boasts a 2-megapixel, high-resolution digital camera, and a microSDTM card slot to store pictures, music or video.
