* What is MobileIGNITE?

Following our recent discussion on fixed-mobile convergence, one of our readers pointed us to an independent industry association dedicated to addressing implementation of FMC. The organization is called MobileIGNITE, which stands for Mobile Integrated Go-To-Market Network IP Telephony Experience. MobileIGNITE is an independent multi-lateral industry association based on a shared Memorandum of Understanding that is committed to FMC solutions based on standards such as CDMA, GSM, UMTS, SIP, IP Multimedia System and IEEE 802.11/16.

Following our recent discussion on fixed-mobile convergence, one of our readers pointed us to an independent industry association dedicated to addressing implementation of FMC. The organization is called MobileIGNITE, which stands for Mobile Integrated Go-To-Market Network IP Telephony Experience. MobileIGNITE is an independent multi-lateral industry association based on a shared Memorandum of Understanding that is committed to FMC solutions based on standards such as Code Division Multiple Access, GSM, Universal Mobile Telecommunication System, Session Initiation Protocol, IP Multimedia System and IEEE 802.11/16.

The association includes service providers and IMS, mobile and VoIP vendors that are focused on SIP-based FMC services today and on a smooth transition to the IMS environment . In a statement, the association noted that its focus will include interoperability specifications, market requirements development and liaison with industry standards organizations and other industry groups.

At its first meeting earlier this month, the MobileIGNITE interoperability group announced its first three initiatives:

* IP Centrex (SIP) to mobile network (SS7 and IMS) inter-working.

* IMS based VoIP over Wi-Fi to circuit switched cellular voice call handover network to handset interoperability based on emerging Voice Call Continuity standards in 3GPP and 3GPP2.

* Mobile/SIP-based messaging and presence inter-working.

We both remember the good work (and some would suggest a bit of not-so-good work) of past industry associations like the ATM Forum and the Frame Relay Forum. We wish the association well, and remind it of three key lessons we learned from our old forum days: 1) KISS (Keep it simple, silly), 2) Make sure you work hand-in-glove with the standards bodies, and 3) ALWAYS focus on the end user.

Further information about MobileIGNITE can be found at its Web site.
