The two were already brought together by SBC, which is sinking $6 billion into a fiber networking featuring Microsoft-based IP TV services. Alcatel is SBC’s integrator for that project, dubbed Lightspeed. Microsoft and Alcatel will market each other’s IP TV software, and broadband network access equipment and integration services. Here’s something Cisco thinks unthinkable: membership in Juniper’s Infranet Initiative Council (IIC). For the first time, Cisco sent two “observers” to a recent IIC meeting to encourage Juniper to steer the group’s activities toward the standards organizations. IIC encouraged Cisco to join its group. Cisco declined. And around and around it goes… Comprised of service providers and vendors, IIC was formed by Juniper last year to come up with a way to make the Internet — or public IP networking — a profit-making machine.
