Swan Labs last month added a software module to its line of WAN acceleration appliances to optimize the performance of Web-enabled apps traveling over wide-area links.
Swan, an 18-month-old start-up, hasn’t wasted any time building up its product portfolio with two acquisitions.
Swan picked up NetCelera last summer and then in December announced it had purchased Pivia as well. The company’s NetCelera WAN acceleration product line includes technology acquired from ITWorx as well as application acceleration software from Pivia. Company executives say NetCelera products allow customers to attack a variety of problems without having to purchase several appliances.
“The concept is to provide a WAN application deployment appliance that can be infused with personality modules,” says Tom Tansy, Swan’s vice president of marketing. “Multiple vendors do compression, SSL offloading and applications acceleration separately. We are combining them into a single appliance.”
The latest product is the NetCelera Web Accelerator, an add-on module. The module plugs into NetCelera appliances deployed at both ends of a WAN connection, where they examine traffic as it leaves a LAN and look for patterns.
Swan says the Web Accelerator add-on module “parallelizes network requests and uses browser and edge caches for static and dynamic content to reduce the number of network round trips” and essentially improves the end-user Web experience. By staging content elements closer to users in browser caches, the software can reduce latency and provide better access for users on the WAN, the company says.
The company competes with Expand Networks, NetScaler, Peribit, Packeteer, Riverbed and Zeus Technology.
Available now, the Web Accelerator software starts at $50,000, with the second copy of the software for a symmetrical deployment priced at $25,000. The NetCelera appliance costs $4,000.
