* Swan Labs to buy Pivia
Swan Labs last week announced it would acquire WAN application acceleration vendor Pivia for an undisclosed sum.
Swan, which calls its products “application shaping tools,” plans to add Pivia’s WAN application delivery and optimization products to its roster. Just formed in January, Swan bought ITWorx’s NetCelera line this spring for an undisclosed amount of stock and intends to round out its NetCelera enterprise application shaping products with Pivia Performance Server and PPS Remote Edition.
Pivia’s technology tracks the performance of applications and prioritizes application acceleration based on end-user needs, and the remote version enables real-time collaboration between end users in disparate geographic locations. Swan focuses on optimizing higher protocol layers than compression does, taking into account the features of session flows and application features.
Swan will distribute the Pivia software as an add-on module to NetCelera and will integrate application-intelligence technology into the NetCelera base platform. The company says that because Pivia’s PPS products operate at Layer 7, they are complementary to the Layer 5 NetCelera technology. Using PPS intelligence, NetCelera session awareness can mirror the requirements of the application to the network to ensure Web-enabled applications are optimized to perform over the WAN.
“Users are demanding more capabilities from WAN optimization vendors. Application visibility and acceleration are key areas users require to address WAN latency and throughput concerns,” says Stephen Elliot, a senior analyst with IDC. “Acquisitions such as this will continue to push the technology to meet the growing user requirements as well as begin to separate the playing field of vendors.”
Swan this year garnered about $15 million in funding from Norwest Venture Partners and Doll Capital Management.
