Job board site Dice.com’s 2003 Annual Salary Survey shows that tech salaries recovered to the highest level since 2000. Technology pros earned an overall average salary of $69,400 in 2003, up 2% from $67,900 in 2002.
Conducted between January and December 2003, the survey is based on responses from more than 21,000 visitors to job board Dice.com. Among the findings, the gender gap narrowed for the first time since the survey’s inception in 2000. Women’s salaries increased 5% to $62,800, while men’s increased only 2%. However, the gap varied by industry. Women’s salaries were only 3% less than men’s in the Internet services field, while the gap was 19% in the medical and pharmaceutical industry.
“The technology market has stabilized and salaries are beginning to recover overall,” says Scot Melland, president and CEO of Dice. “Some segments are doing especially well; average salaries for women, for example, have recovered faster as evidenced by the narrowing of the gender gap. Entry-level technology professionals are also earning more money, which is consistent with an economic turnaround.”
Examining the results by job title, network and MIS manager positions saw the biggest increases over 2002, gaining 7% and 5%. Just as in 2002, IT management was the highest paying position – that title reaped an average salary of $104,000 in 2003.
