* Coyote Point Systems teams with Dell for load-balancing appliance
Coyote Point Systems last week at NetWorld+Interop teamed with Dell to unveil a load-balancing SSL acceleration appliance.
Coyote Point is offering the Equalizer Extreme on a Dell PowerEdge 1750 server. The Extreme can handle 1G bit/sec of bandwidth and 12 million concurrent sessions. The product costs $10,000.
The product sits at the edge of a data center and balances traffic among Web and application servers. The appliance acts “more or less as a router” in the network, explains Bill Kish, CEO of Coyote Point.
“As requests come in, it monitors performance on servers and sends requests to the server best able to handle it,” he says.
The device can offload SSL encryption from servers. It can also perform Layer 4-7 load balancing. The company competes most directly with Cisco, Radware, F5 Networks and Extreme Networks.
With the new high-end offering, Kish says the company reduced the price of its previous high-end device, the Equalizer E450 appliance, to $8,000. At the low end, the company’s Equalizer E250i appliance costs about $4,000.
“We want to keep our products in a certain price range,” he says. Coyote Point has about 4,000 appliances deployed worldwide in about 1,500 to 2,000 customer accounts.
