As San Francisco bids farewell to the Linux devotees who gathered in the city for last week’s LinuxWorld event, Boston is preparing for the Fall Voice on the Network show being held Sept. 22-25 (see upcoming show links below). More specifically, Boston is preparing for Network World’s Voice over IP Showdown, where leading VoIP vendors will wrestle with the important questions of the day.

Last month, we invited Cisco, Avaya, Nortel, GoBean and M5 Networks to send their top technical reps to VON to tell us why we should listen to their VoIP story and how they will address your concerns. We’ll report back on who took part and what they had to say, but why not go there yourself to see the Showdown at first hand?

Back to this week’s industry gatherings. HP CEO Carly Fiorina opened the HP World conference which is taking place in Atlanta. In her keynote she told attendees why, unsurprisingly, IT does matter as she referred to a widely discussed May article by Nicholas Carr in the Harvard Business Review. More interestingly though, she made digs at Dell, which recently dropped “Computer” from its name. She referred to Dell as a “low tech” company, which  will sell whatever it can, including televisions, through a distribution model that’s effective.
