IBM in November will begin mass production of an embedded PowerPC chip, the PowerPC 405EP, designed for wireless LAN access points and other networking applications including DSL routers and cable modems, the company announced Tuesday.
The chip has built-in dual 10/100 Ethernet connectivity, so that designers do not have to add off-chip Ethernet connections, and will support CPU (central processor unit) speeds of 133 MHz, 200 MHz and 266 MHz, the Armonk, N.Y., company said in a statement.
Based on IBM’s 0.18-micron copper process technology, the PowerPC 405EP also features a PCI interface and synchronous dynamic RAM controller, IBM said.
The company will begin sampling the PowerPC 405EP chip this month at 133 MHz, 200 MHz and 266 MHz and plans to price the 133 MHz processor at $17 each in volumes of 10,000, IBM said.
