If you’re like most people, there are sports you like even though they’re not terribly popular, perhaps because you’ve enjoyed them personally. I loved to fence. My wife was an archery instructor. My dear friend and web designer trains horses. And all of us can, if we choose, see hours of our favorite sports, courtesy of NBCOlympics.com. Well, almost all. For a few sports, the video isn’t quite up to snuff for showing details of the rapid action (for example, I found watching water polo to be problematic). But for most events, the video quality is a literal eye-opener. In particular, it’s hard to think of a business-oriented video objective that could be met by the kind of quality NBC is delivering in a browser, with the only required download being Microsoft Silverlight.
I’m telling you this in part for your own enjoyment, and to help you be a hero to your friends and family. But even if you and everybody you know don’t care about sports in the slightest, that site is worth checking out for business reasons. Obviously, few of us, as individuals or organizations, are able to match NBC and the Olympics for production quality. But I’d guess that for almost any business purpose — sales of any product, training of any kind, tours of any kind of facility — it would be pretty cost-effective to generate as much video as the viewers will bear.
