This week’s Democratic National Convention in Denver has accelerated the roll out of telecommuting technologies in some businesses, reports Cisco Subnet’s Jamey Heary in his blog. Worried that their employees won’t be able to get to work due to the many road closures and increase in traffic, some local employers have set up remote access teleworker services. “Some businesses, using the DNC as a catalyst, are taking a more long term approach and rolling out VPN routers and IP telephony to home offices in an effort to cut voice costs and provide employees the same experience they have at the office,” writes Jamey. One such company is Johns Manville, a maker of insulation and roofing supplies which has introduced a Cisco VPN to its employees.
Meanwhile, blogger Brad Reese is reporting that eight Cisco Networking Academy students worked alongside Cisco engineers to install Cisco VoIP telephones, a wireless service canopy and Cisco routers and switches in Denver’s Pepsi Center, where the convention is being held.
