In a product test by Network World that pitted ESX against Hyper-V, VMware slightly edged out Microsoft in performance, and only in some instances. (Interestingly, the open source virtualization vendors were invited to participate including Citrix/Xen and Red Hat, but declined). The question of which hypervisor is faster depends on a number of factors such as how virtual machine (VM) guest operating systems are allocated to the available host CPUs and memory.
That said, VMware ESX was the overall winner in a test limited to six concurrent VMs on the only Linux platform Hyper-V officially supports: Novell’s SuSE Enterprise Linux. ESX pulled down top honors in most of the basic load testing, multi-CPU VM hosting, and disk I/O performance tests. Microsoft’s Hyper-V, however, did well when we used a special set of drivers released by Microsoft to boost performance on SuSE.
