The story itself is any parent’s worst nightmare: An 11-year-old girl – allegedly drunk – leads police on an 8-mile chase at speeds of up to 100 mph before she flips the car and is slightly injured.
The advertisement tucked inside the story represents any marketer’s worst nightmare: “HOORAY BEER!”
One can presume that the juxtaposition was not what the brewers of Red Stripe had in mind when they booked this ad campaign.
Of course, you take your chances when you advertise on any Web site, but particularly a news site such as Yahoo News (tech sites are safer, needless to say).
Regular readers know that we’ve been following a similar though far less serious situation regarding a Disney-related Web site called MiceAge.com and its successful efforts to be rid of jockstrap ads.
It’s clear the online advertising industry has work to do on this matter.
