Moving on, a little birdie told me the other day (actually last Wednesday) about a nice Vista SP1 whitepaper that was posted on the Vista team blog. Links are as follows: Vista Blog
Strangely enough, while I was browsing through the whitepaper, I received an email with the follow title: “Windows Vista SP1 Beta Opt-In Opportunity”. Honestly, the timing was very strange. Anyhow, I guess this means that I get to play around with SP1 (time permitting). But, the question I had while browsing the whitepaper was: Would SP1 solve most of complaints with Vista? At that time I didn’t know… I had to finish the whitepaper. So what is my opinion? Well the jury is still out. For the most part Microsoft has been trying to fix Vista’s performance, compatibility, and reliability problems through various hotfixes that have been rolled down to users via Windows Update. So, what does SP1 really do for me? Well for one thing, all of those little hotfixes are in one service pack. Furthermore, you will be also getting a number of fixes not slated for release on Windows Update and some new features. Overall, the service pack is not meant to make Vista that much more “feature richer”. Rather, Microsoft is really trying to correct the many issues (and address the lack of certain features) that sprung to life after Vista went RTM. In other words, stuff that should have been corrected or included before Vista was released to the loving arms of its users. For all of today’s Microsoft news, visit the Microsoft Subnet.
