If you want to play with Cisco’s 16-slot mega Cisco Carrier Routing System (CRS-1) get a job at a growing Internet and telecoms provider. Iliad is one of France’s major Internet and telecoms provider and its Free broadband services subsidiary is upgrading its CRS-1 router, which it has owned for less than a year, to the full 16-slots. Free says this would double the capacity of its core network to offer a potential capacity of up to 2.5Tbps in a multi-chassis configuration.
Free is growing its network capacity to support its recently announced user-created TV channel service and an on-demand service for movies and TV series, as well as a nationwide fiber-to-the-home rollout. According to the Cisco news release about this deal, Free expects IP traffic requirements to double every 18 months.
