Cisco to invests in femtocell start-up (report)

Analysis
Jan 22, 20082 mins

Cisco is poised to announce a stake in U.K. femtocell maker ip.access, reports iht.com. The start-up’s other investors include Intel and Motorola as well as Amadeus Capital Partners.  Femtocells have been described as having your own personal cell tower. They are small cellular access points that route nearby wireless voice traffic through preexisting broadband connections. In this way, femtocells can provide VoIP for wireless handsets that can both improve call quality and save money by letting users make calls without using up their cell minutes (see Can femtocells live up to the hype?).
