RealNetworks has taken an undisclosed minority stake in struggling online music provider Listen.com, helping the company stay afloat a while longer. Listen.com, which at $0.49 per song takes a loss on each download, recently laid off one-third of its staff. No word on whether Listen.com’s wares will be added to Real’s SuperPass subscription service. Unfortunately for legitimate music distributors, free services like Kazaa are too easy and too cheap (free) for many consumers to ignore, despite any potential legal issues (NY Times – registration required).
