Power over Ethernet electrifies Axis

Axis Communications has a couple of cool new accessories for helping deliver power to its network cameras when a tradition electrical outlet is not available. The new LAN Midspan and Active Splitter products help deliver electrical current over a standard Ethernet connection, eliminating the need to rewire electrical systems to help support a camera system. Axis’ Power over Ethernet technology, which is compatible with the IEEE 802.3af standard, allows a camera to receive both data and power up to 100 meters away over standard Category 5 cable. Both the LAN Midspan and Active Splitter are now available through Axis resellers. Active Splitter is available for $89, while a 6-port LAN Midspan unit starts at $598.
