The Chinese government, in effort to become less dependent on Western technology and to avoid high licensing fees, is dropping support for MPEG and is looking to develop its own standard, according to Geek.com. China is working with a group of vendors, including IBM and Microsoft, on a new standard called “AVS”, which it will license at a much lower rate than MPEG.
