Latitude and FaceTime are combining efforts to create the MeetingPlace IM Gateway, which will allow users to launch Web/voice conferences by inviting attendees via an instant messaging client. The gateway will work with popular IM clients such as AOL, Yahoo, Windows Messenger and Lotus. IM provides a quick way to see if a user is available and invite them to an ad hoc conference. MeetingPlace IM Gateway, currently in beta, installs behind the firewall, allowing network administrators to better control access and security. Latitude and FaceTime expect the product to ship sometime in the fourth quarter with an average price of $15,000.
