TechSmith, makers of Camtasia Studio, has released a new QuickTime codec that is said to provide lossless compression of video captured from on-screen activity (i.e. creating a demo of how piece of software works). The new EnSharpen codec works with most video editing tools on both the Mac and PC platform. The decoder is a free plug-in for QuickTime. According to TechSmith’s comparison chart, EnSharpen can compress a 280 M/byte video down to about 50.7 M/bytes. A free trial version EnSharpen is available here. TechSmith offers a Windows or Mac version of the codec for $149. A bundle that includes codecs for both operating systems is $249.
