A little follow-up from our Wainhouse Summit 2005 coverage. Mike Pihlman, our friend over at the Energy Sciences Network (ESNet), sent in some stats about video usage on the research network (which by the way is run by Lawrence Berkeley Labs.) In June of this year alone, ESNet had some 1083 registered endpoints and used over 4400 port hours on the various multi-point control units in the network. The total number of connected calls was 10,200 with 2900 of those lasting over 1/2 hour. Nearly 1800 calls lasted over an hour.

What is different about ESNet’s users as compared to a typical enterprise is the type of endpoint being used. More desktop-based endpoints are connecting to the network than set-top systems:
Pihlman says the big time researchers that use ESNet like being able to run meetings from their desktop and not have to move into a conference room to talk with remote colleagues.
