In case you missed it, the latest trend sweeping Facebook is the Ice Bucket Challenge, a scenario where friends challenge each other to either donate $100 to raise awareness for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) or pour a bucket of ice cold water on their heads (or both)
TIME reports that they’ve already seen upwards of 1.2 million unique Ice Bucket Challenge videos. Impressively, the ALS Association in just the last two weeks alone has already raised $5.5 million.
To say that the Ice Bucket Challenge has gone viral is an understatement. What’s more, the challenge has even grabbed the attention of some the tech world’s biggest stars. Just this week, for example, Apple CEO Tim Cook participated in the challenge with some help from singer Michael Franti. Even better is that he challenges Dr. Dre — a newly minted Apple employee thanks to the company’s $3 billion Beats acquisition — to do the same.
Just as interesting, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates too the Ice Bucket Challenge today, and in doing so, also challenged Tesla CEO Elon Musk to step up to the plate as well. And oh yeah, Gates was challenged by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
