Arkin has developed software tools for automatically setting up and controlling virtual networks
VMware Monday announced plans to acquire Arkin, a specialist in helping customers manage physical and virtual networks, for an undisclosed sum.
Arkin says its tools provide “cross-domain visibility,” which means that it can aggregate operational data from both virtual and physical infrastructures. Correlating this data can help organizations root out the cause of problems and fix them faster.

Another reason VMware was so interested in Arkin is because of the company’s experience in helping customers deploy VMware’s NSX network virtualization technology, which competes with offerings from Cisco and others. Arkin automatically analyzes virtual machines in the network and categorizes them into groups based on their workloads. Arkin’s technology can be used to automatically generate security groups and firewall rules for these VMs and will alert managers when VMs fall outside of their defined security groups.
VMware will integrate Arkin into its Cloud Management Business Unit, and specifically its vRealize Automation Suite.

Arkin is a venture-backed company headquartered in Santa Clara, with offices in India. According to Crunchbase, Arkin has received two rounds of funding totaling $22 million.
