The infrastructure required to run artificial intelligence algorithms and train deep neural networks is so dauntingly complex that it\u2019s hampering enterprise AI deployments, experts say.\n\u201c55% of firms have not yet achieved any tangible business outcomes from AI, and 43% say it\u2019s too soon to tell,\u201d says Forrester Research about the challenges of transitioning from AI excitement to tangible, scalable AI success.\n\n\u201cThe wrinkle? AI is not a plug-and-play proposition,\u201d the analyst group says. \u201cUnless firms plan, deploy, and govern it correctly, new AI tech will provide meager benefits at best or, at worst, result in unexpected and undesired outcomes.\u201d\nVendors are responding with prepackaged products and services aimed at accelerating adoption of enterprise AI.\u00a0For example, Pure Storage recently teamed with Nvidia to release an integrated software and hardware bundle that\u2019s tuned for AI workloads and data requirements. The goal is to help enterprises deploy a simplified infrastructure.\nEnterprises stand ready to move into AI, according to industry watchers. Analysts predict increased adoption of data-driven applications across all verticals as companies look to retool business processes to be more efficient and deliver more personalized service to customers.\nAI technologies will be a top-five investment priority for more than 30% of CIOs by 2020, predicts Gartner.\nPure Storage, Nvidia, Arista AI bundle\n\u201cOne of their biggest challenges is finding that onramp to AI and advanced analytics. Infrastructure is a huge problem,\u201d says Matt Burr, general manager at Pure Storage for FlashBlade, the company\u2019s storage platform. \u201cAIRI solves that problem for them.\u201d\nAIRI, which stands for AI-ready infrastructure, combines FlashBlade, Nvidia DGX-1 supercomputers powered by Nvidia Tesla\u00a0V100 GPUs, and Arista 100GbE switches for connectivity. AIRI is supported by the Nvidia GPU Cloud deep-learning stack and Pure Storage AIRI Scaling Toolkit. The combination delivers a fourfold improvement in data-scientist productivity, Pure Storage and Nvidia claim.\n Pure Storage \nOne AIRI customer, call-center outsourcing provider Global Response, is working to retool its existing business processes using AI. Its plans include developing a call-center system that enables real-time transcription and analysis of customer support calls to increase speed and quality of service. The company wanted a simple foundation that would allow it to deploy AI at scale, and it chose AIRI.\nStephen Shooster, co-CEO of the call-center provider, says the integrated software and hardware bundle is enabling teams to get up and running in hours instead of weeks or months.\n"We've reached an inflection point where integration of AI throughout our organization is critical to the ongoing success of our business," Shooster said in a statement. "While we wanted to move quickly, infrastructure for AI was slowing us down because it is very complex to deploy." With AIRI, \u201call of the question marks and complexities associated with AI are solved.\u201d\nIBM cloud services promote AI\nAt IBM, new services are aimed at facilitating AI adoption. One new cloud service, called Cloud Private for Data, is a data-science and machine-learning platform that brings together the components enterprises need without requiring massive systems-integration efforts. Cloud Private for Data is an application layer deployed on Kubernetes open-source container software and comes with APIs to hook into third-party products.\n\n\n\n\n\n\u201cWhen enterprise intelligence is enhanced, productivity increases and standards can emerge,\u201d says Rob Thomas, general manager of IBM analytics, in a post announcing the availability of the new service. \u201cThe only drawback is the assembly required: all systems need to talk to each other and data architecture must be normalized. What if an organization could establish the building blocks of AI, with no assembly required?\u201d\nIBM Cloud Private for Data is engineered to facilitate data science, data engineering and application building within a single integrated experience, with no assembly required, Thomas says.\n\u201cIBM has rightly recognized that a skills gap exists when it comes rolling out AI,\u201d says Krishna Roy, senior analyst at 451 Research, in a report that examines IBM\u2019s new private-cloud platform and a related public cloud service. \u201cNonetheless, IBM is still operating in a crowded market. It is therefore to going to square up against competition from fellow members of the data science establishment, as well as newer market entrants looking to address corporate AI requirements.\u201d\nKogentix, for example, offers an end-to-end platform for building machine-learning-driven applications. Other startups that are looking to serve enterprise AI needs include Anaconda, Dataiku and DataRobot. \u201cMany of them share an objective of making AI corporate-ready, by providing an end-to-end environment for machine-learning-based analysis,\u201d Roy says.
