New Relic extends observability into ChatGPT-hosted apps

New Relic’s latest observability capability provides enterprises with visibility into the performance, user experience, and reliability of applications embedded within ChatGPT.

New Relic introduced an application monitoring capability in its Intelligent Observability Platform that the company says will equip enterprise customers with visibility into the performance, reliability, and user experience of apps embedded in AI-driven interfaces, such as ChatGPT.

The ChatGPT app monitoring option extends New Relic’s browser agent into the GPT iframe environment, which the company says addresses a challenge for developers building ChatGPT applications. According to a New Relic blog announcing the new capability, traditional browser tools can lose visibility due to security restrictions and content policies.

“Monitoring for ChatGPT apps empowers businesses to confidently integrate their offerings into AI prompt answers, allowing users to interact with professional services within the natural flow of an AI conversation,” Jordan Porter, lead software engineer at New Relic, wrote in the blog. “But here’s the catch: once your application renders inside an iframe within a host like ChatGPT, it traditionally enters a ‘black box.’ Standard browser monitoring tools often falter in these restricted environments.”

New Relic’s cloud-based observability platform monitors applications and services in real time to provide insights into software, hardware, and cloud performance. The new capability extends the platform’s browser agent into the GPT iframe environment. It captures standard telemetry data, including latency and connectivity of an application within the GPT iframe. According to New Relic, ChatGPT app monitoring offers deep telemetry to ensure AI-generated UIs are functional, high-performing, and conversion-ready.

“Bringing business services into the natural flow of a ChatGPT conversation is a powerful, intuitive, and revenue-generating strategy,” said New Relic Chief Product Officer Brian Emerson, in a statement. “But once your carefully crafted application instantiates inside ChatGPT, it traditionally enters a black box where standard browser monitoring tools can fail. At New Relic, we’ve worked quickly to stay steps ahead of customers who want to maximize this opportunity, ensuring that businesses monetizing genAI aren’t flying blind when it comes to user experience and system health.”

New Relic’s ChatGPT app monitoring capability helps enterprise customers:

  • Detect user frustration: Error clicks and dead clicks can help identify when an app is causing friction for end users.
  • Monitor layout instability: Excessive Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) activity within the iframe as the AI streams content, can also cause a frustrating user experience.
  • Track app performance: Developers can optimize for different host environments if they understand how an application performs when it doesn’t own the top-level window.
  • Trace apps end-to-end: A complete of every transaction in the ChatGPT iframe through to backend services can connect the end user’s interaction and experience.

“The era of ‘Agentic AI,’ where applications increasingly live inside other applications, is just beginning,” New Relic’s Porter wrote. “As your services become integrated into various AI platforms, the ability to monitor their performance, reliability, and user experience with those platforms is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity.”

The ChatGPT feature is available now as part of the New Relic Intelligent Observability Platform. Existing customers can enable it by installing the latest browser agent and configuring user journeys within their ChatGPT-embedded applications.
