Last week's live interoperability exhibition may smooth way to higher bandwidth tech
Cisco rival Juniper last week demonstrated 100Gbps Ethernet interoperability with a handful of other vendors at the OFC/NFOEC optical networking conference in San Diego. The live demonstration involved Juniper’s T1600 core router with passing 100G traffic back and forth with an optical transport system using two different CFP transceivers conforming to the IEEE 802.3ba 100GBASE-LR4 draft standard.
The optical system was an Infinera DTN transport system. The CFP transceivers were developed by Finisar and Opnext, and the 100G signals were generated by Ixia and Exfo testers. The demonstration also included 100GBASE-SR10 CFP modules from Reflex Photonics.
Interoperability among multiple vendors is important in driving down the cost and spurring widespread deployment of 100G Ethernet routers, switches, optical transport and other equipment, the vendors say. Demand is driven by service providers that need 100G Ethernet to meet the bandwidth demands of video and cloud computing.
Verizon recently trialed Juniper’s 100G Ethernet interfaces on the T1600. AT&T did the same with Cisco’s new CRS-3 core router.
