Capellas will head data center, cloud computing coalition
Former Compaq CEO Michael Capellas has been tapped by Cisco and EMC to lead the companies’ Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) coalition. That includes becoming the CEO of Acadia, the Cisco-EMC joint venture to accelerate adoption of their data center and private cloud computing products and services.

VCE is charged with developing the pre-integrated server, switching, storage and virtualization products the coalition calls “Vblocks”; Acadia trains customers and partners on how to install and use the products. VCE has 45 partners and six system integrators currently selling Vblocks, and 200 other partners are in the certification phase, according to EMC and Cisco.
The total market for private cloud infrastructure, including the elements that can be addressed by the VCE coalition, is estimated by EMC and Cisco to be $85 billion by 2015.
Capellas was chairman and CEO of Compaq from 1999 to 2001, the year of its merger with HP. He then became president of HP after the merger, staying on for about six months.
After that, Capellas served as MCI’s president and CEO from 2002 until 2006, departing after its merger with Verizon. Most recently, he was chairman and CEO of First Data Corporation, an electronic commerce and payment processing company.
At VCE/Acadia, Capellas will report to Joe Tucci, EMC chairman and CEO, and John Chambers, Cisco chairman and CEO, and the Acadia Board. He also serves on the Cisco board.
