Leader at highest share in years, Infonetics reports
An improving economy, pent-up demand, and a reduction in backlog due to supply chain constraints have all led to first quarter growth in the Ethernet switch market.
The market was up 12% in Q1 to $4.6 billion, according to Infonetics Research. This follows a 15% hike in the fourth quarter of 2009, and is up 41% from the first quarter of 2009.
Cisco grew revenue 17% in Q1 while all other vendors grew a combined 1%, Infonetics notes. Cisco’s market share now stands at 72.3%, its highest in years, according to the firm.
The combined HP and 3Com/H3C are the #2 vendor by a wide margin, Infonetics notes, with 20% port and 10% revenue share. The next closest vendor in terms of revenue is Avaya with 2%, thanks to its acquisition of Nortel’s enterprise assets.
Extreme also posted strong gains in Q1 while many vendors were flat or down for the quarter, Infonetics found.
In enterprise routers, worldwide revenue was down half a percent to $818 million, after posting a 10% gain in Q4, 2009. The overall enterprise router market – high-end, midrange, branch and SOHO — is up 4.5% from the first quarter of last year, according to Infonetics.
Cisco posted a flat quarter in enterprise routers, the firm notes. A decrease in midrange router sales was offset by “significant” increases in high-end and low-end/SOHO router sales.
