Sales of Nexus switches way up while F5 widens lead in application controllers
Sales of Cisco’s Nexus data center switches helped propel the first quarter market for “purpose-built” switches and data center networking equipment overall, according to Infonetics Research.
Sales of data center-specific switches grew 30% sequentially in Q1. Overall, sales of data center Ethernet switches — including general purpose, purpose-built, and blade switches — increased 16% to $1.16 billion in the first quarter, which followed a “very strong” fourth quarter, according to Infonetics.
Cisco increased its data center Ethernet switch revenue 23.5% sequentially in Q1. Cisco was not so fortunate in sales of application delivery controllers however.
Though worldwide sales of ADCs are up 28% in Q1 over the same period a year ago, F5 continued to grow its lead in the market at Cisco’s expense. F5 pulled away in Q1 and now has an almost 20 point lead over Cisco after both vendors were virtually neck and neck in market share in 2007 and 2008, Infonetics found.
And of the top WAN optimization vendors, Blue Coat was the only one with positive revenue results — up 7%, Infonetics reports.
