Open source IT monitoring and management application update available for free download now.

Open source IT management applications became readily available in the past decade, not only via communities touting free software but also by way of commercial vendors such as GroundWork Open Source, Hyperic and Zenoss offering open source versions of their enterprise management software.

Open source management tool alternatives hit the mark

This week SpringSource announced it has updated HYperic HQ Open Source. The software, available free for download, offers features such as auto-discovery, inventory and performance tracking. Hyperic HQ Open Source also lets IT managers monitor performance metrics, log files, configuration changes and business metrics. According to the vendor, “Hyperic HQ keeps you on top of application and infrastructure performance and health.”

Hyperic, acquired by SpringSource earlier this year before VMware acquired SpringSource, was among a handful of vendors forging the open source management software market with commercial product add-ons and support packages. While still supporting the open source software with a community and licenses available through GNU GPL v2, the vendor also offers an enterprise-level product available for a limited time as a free trial download.
