Watch Compliance Issues of Social Computing
A couple of significant product releases are having an impact on social computing: Cisco’s Enterprise Collaboration Platform for group collaboration, Pulse for tracking discussions, and See and Share for creating internal YouTube-style repositories for video; and Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) SharePoint 2010, which incorporates social computing features such as tagging, microblogging, and shared workspaces.
These product introductions underscore the growing desire of businesses to leverage the concepts of public social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to improve collaboration and business processes while meeting requirements for data management and compliance. In fact, 39 percent of organizations are deploying or planning to deploy enterprise social computing applications, according to Nemertes, but the introduction of social computing raises concerns around compliance, the effect on business processes, and centralized versus decentralized deployment models. IT managers must evaluate social computing platforms to improve collaboration, but also address concerns around applicability, management, and compliance.
