Q3 Dell'Oro report on switching links growth to 10G
To the surprise of no one, Cisco is the leading vendor of 10G Ethernet to data centers and everybody else. Yet it’s 10G data center deployments that accounted for the second consecutive quarter of growth for the Ethernet switch market in Q3, according to Dell’Oro Group.
10G is being deployed in both server connectivity and port aggregation applications in the data center, Dell’Oro found. Data center applications will drive most of the overall Ethernet switch market in the quarters to come, the firm states.
Total 10 Gigabit Ethernet revenues grew 10% to $737 million during the quarter, with most of the growth being driven by “purpose-built” 10G switches for the data center, Dell’Oro notes. Cisco’s share is 70+%.
Sales of fixed configuration 10G switches, usually for top-of-rack server connectivity applications, grew 30%. Cisco and HP together owned 70% of that market, Dell’Oro states.
The total 10G Ethernet switch market is expected to reach $2.8 billion from $2.5 billion a year ago, a growth rate of 12%. The total Ethernet switch market was just less than $4 billion in Q3, down $1 billion, or 20%, from a year ago.
