Firefox has benefited from all of the many extensions that have been developed for the browser. Chrome has not, but Google is seeking to correct the situation. The company this week made it possible for developers to upload their extensions to Google Chrome’s extension gallery.
The company’s blog says it is taking this step ahead of the “full launch” of Chrome’s extension beta program.
Developers who write an extension can just put it in a zip file, along with a description and any screenshots (or YouTube videos) they may have crafted to explain the extension’s features, and send it to Google.
Google isn’t planning to manually review many extensions, just “those that include an NPAPI component and all content scripts that affect ‘file://’ URLs.”
