Cisco was founded in 1984 and by 1988 boasted 29 employees. My how times have changed.
Today is Cisco’s 25th birthday. The company was founded December 10, 1984, by husband and wife Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner, two former Stanford University computer scientists whose efforts to enable email between computers on different networks led to the invention of the first multiprotocol router.
Remember 1984? Ronald Reagan was president, Mary Lou Retton won the Olympic all-around gold medal in womens gymnastics and Prince released his Purple Rain album. It was the year that the US Bell System was dismantled, Apple introduced the Macintosh computer and Sony made the first 3 1/2″ disk.
Cisco has come along way since then. The company now employs 63,000 in 200 office worldwide. Here’s a corporate video that showcases some of Cisco’s milestones since it was founded, including a cute story by John Morgridge about one a router sales call he ever went on in the early days. When he joined Cisco iin 1988, the company had 29 employees.
