Trials private cloud service based on data center platform
An early beta tester of Cisco’s Unified Computing System, service provider Savvis is now trialing a private cloud service with the data center platform. As colleague Carolyn Duffy Marsan reports, Savvis has signed up more than a dozen enterprise customers for a trial of the service, called Symphony, in January; Savvis expects to make it generally available in mid-2010.
UCS and Cisco’s Unified Service Delivery platform — which bundles UCS with Cisco’s CRS-1 router and Nexus 7000 data center switch — will serve as the foundation for Symphony’s data center resource provisioning capabilities, Marsan writes. Savvis is a longtime Cisco customer — its IP backbone is Cisco-based and the carrier has Cisco’s ear when it comes to product development: there were only nine other beta testers for UCS aside from Savvis.
Savvis CTO Bryan Doerr says his company works with Cisco to get them to think about how to better package and deliver IT systems — servers, switches, routers and storage — to align with the economies and multi-tenant requirements of private cloud computing, Marsan reports.
