But almost half of those surveyed said it won't change their buying plans
End users view the Virtual Computing Environment coalition — the partnership between Cisco, EMC and VMware to pre-integrate and modularize their products for rapid adoption in data centers — favorably, but many say it will not change their spending plans. Those are just some of the results of a survey conducted last month by CIOZone Research Network of 145 end users from 22 different countries.
The survey, conducted last month, sought to obtain end users’ viewpoints on which relationships or partnerships they felt would be most strained by the collaboration and which vendors’ end users would be most positively or negatively impacted. Sixty-nine percent of respondents viewed VCE favorably but 41% said it won’t greatly affect their buying decisions.
CIOZone said this might be due to budgets “yet to normalize” coming out of the recession.
As far as affected vendors, this will come as no surprise: end users view HP as the vendor most likely to be negatively impacted by the collaboration of VMware, Cisco, and EMC. They also expressed concern about the strain VCE might place on HP’s relationships with VMware and Cisco.
Here’s another shocker: the vendors most likley to benefit from VCE? Cisco, followed by EMC, according to the majority of the respondents. VMware received the third most votes in that category but it also received the second greatest number of vote for being the most negatively impacted by the collaboration. According to CIOZone:
It seems end users are of two minds. While Cisco can obviously help a vendor open more accounts and sell more product, and while collaboration in general can be positive for end users, Cisco could also slow widespread adoption. This is due to the “anti-Cisco” contingent of enterprises, which would surely choose to go another route.
NetApp received the third greatest number of respondent votes as the vendor most negatively impacted by VCE, due to the strain it will have on its relationship with VMware. Indeed, VMware’s relationships with Cisco rivals were viewed by many VCE observers as likely to be strained from its closer working relationship with Cisco.
