Analyst reports active interest among resellers and their customers
VARs are anxious to get their hands on Cisco’s Unified Computing System – in both standalone and vBlock configurations, reports Avian Securities analyst Catharine Trebnick after talking to “high-level” resellers and contacts across the US. UCS is going into test labs for six to nine month periods and some VARS are “actively lobbying” to be trained on the vBlock version of UCS, which is tightly integrated with EMC storage and VMware.
Cisco has been pricing trial units aggressively too, Avian reports. But UCS won’t have a material impact on Cisco revenue until they go from trial to production – which Avian estimates is the second half of calendar 2010.
Avian expects the Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) coalition between Cisco, EMC and VMware to move 130+ UCS pilots to production “near-term”; sales teams may have a 30% sequential quota, Trebnick reports.
Cisco has also been sharing their list of the 20 to 25 top enterprise companies that have adopted UCS with VARs. Resellers say UCS is generating a lot of interest among customers who are “willing to invest time and effort to hear their story and kick the tires,” according to Avian’s report.
The systems are being sold for data center consolidation and virtualization in preparation for internal, private-to-private, and private-to-public cloud services, which Avian believes to be a 2011/12 and beyond opportunity.
