Ethernet aggregation router to support FTTH rollout
Cisco disclosed another Tier 1 carrier customer for its ASR 9000 edge router. Swisscom is deploying the system to support fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services to households in Switzerland.
Swisscom is looking to offer triple-play service bundles of three HDTV channels, 50Mbps (downstream) Internet, and telephone service. It announced FTTH trials last spring, and as of September 2009 the carrier had 1.8 million broadband subscribers in Switzerland, according to Cisco.
The ASR 9000 was launched in November 2008 and is designed to support up to 6.4Tbps of bandwidth, and a nonstop video experience, Cisco says. Other announced Tier 1 carriers using the new aggregation router are Verizon, Deutsche Telekom, SoftBank and Telstra.
Global IP traffic is nearly doubling every two years, Cisco says. This will result in an annual bandwidth demand of more than 125 billion DVDs.
