As U.S. families prepare to gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, Cisco released its 2008 Corporate Social Responsibility Report to highlight the company’s efforts to “improve the health, welfare, and sustainability of its business” and in communities that are less fortunate. As well as working to reduce its absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2012 and shaving $3 million off its annual supply chain management costs through carbon emissions reductions among other efforts, Cisco also pledged employee and financial support to communities in crisis.
For instance, when snowstorms hit parts of China in January, the Cisco Foundation matched Cisco employee contributions for a combined total of $700,000 yuan (approximately $100,000) to rebuild medical stations in the area, reports Cisco. Closer to home, the Cisco Foundation gave $250,000 to Save the Children to aid those affected by the October wildfires in Southern California.
Cisco also provides on-going support to Community Voice Mail, an organization that provides access to phone services for the needy, including the homeless, runaway youths, migrant workers and victims of domestic violence. In 2008, Cisco gave CVM a new three-year grant worth $1.95 million, and donated office space to the organization.
