Google dresses up search results, ad revenues

Searching for that perfect holiday gift via Google? Well, the search engine has a little surprise for you to keep you entertained during your search. Techcrunch noticed that Google has developed little Easter Eggs that appear alongside the Google search results for specific terms, like Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa Gifts. And the whole thing is like an ingenious system to goose ad revenues.

TechCrunch puts it this way:

Sure draws the eyes to those ads. I wonder what those images do for the click rates. But I’m sure it’s all just good holiday cheer.

Sure it is. Google would never use holiday cheer to sell more sweaters. It’s just trying to make the season a bit more festive. But why stop at static icons? As one commenter to the TechCrunch post says:

I think they should make the images blink. that would be even more festive.
