So you want to become a Microsft Certifed MasterOne of Microsoft’s newest certifications, the Microsoft Certified Master (MCM) has generated some confusion about its purpose, scope and place within the certification hierarchy. This is understandable given the fact that it is a new certification and has very different requirements from the traditional MCITP, MCTS and even the MCSE. I will try to dispel some of the confusion surrounding this certification and show its worth.First off this is not a certification for the masses, far from it as matter of fact. You must submit an application (with a non-refundable fee) that will be reviewed to ensure you meet the minimum requirements. After that, you will attend three weeks of intensive training from experts in the fields associated with each of the five different Master Certification tracks. You will also have to take three computer based tests. As a “final” exam, you will have to take an intense hands-on lab. The costs of the tests are part of the US $18,000 dollar program fee – but are expensive if you need to retake them.To be eligible you must possess not only a breadth of knowledge but also a depth of knowledge as well. In most cases you must have numerous verifiable years of experience on the subject before even attempting to pursue this program! For example, if you wish to attend the Microsoft Certified Master: Exchange Server 2007 program, you must have five or more verifiable years of experience with Exchange 2003 and one or more verifiable years of experience with Exchange 2007. There are currently 5 subject areas: Exchange 2007, SQL Server 2008, Windows Server 2008: Directory, Office SharePoint 2007 and Office Communication Server 2007.As stated from the Microsoft Learning site: Master certification enables senior-level IT professionals to demonstrate and validate their technical expertise on Microsoft server products and authoritatively differentiate themselves to prospective employers and customers.
One thing to note about the Certified Master certification is that is a prerequisite for all Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA) certifications. So now the new certification track consists of MCTS → MCITP → MCM → MCA
