Cisco video contest: you vote to award $8K in cash

Cisco Systems wants to make itself a hip — or rather a hip hop — kind of company. It is running a series of contests awarding money to people who submit videos for its “Digital Cribs” series – which showcases how technology shapes people’s daily lives. Earlier this month Cisco completed its second such contest and launched a third — the latest in partnership with New York University’s ProMotion Pictures program and the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. Students from these schools can submit three-minute videos, posted on Cisco’s Digitalcribs.com site, and the public is being asked to vote for their favorite entries. Voting will end January 23rd and the winners will be announced on February 5th.

The videos cover a wide range of subjects — one of them even features the hip hop band The Kidz in the Hall. It was filmed by a student from New York who followed the band on tour to document how the group uses technology in their show and their music. Watch it here.

Two types of winners will be chosen. Cisco will pick the grand winner, who will be granted a sweet $5,000. Voters will choose how an additional $8,000 will be divided based on the percentage of votes each video earns. For example, if a video receives 80% of the total votes cast, the student will receive 80% of the prize money ($6,400).
