Getting Barack Obama onto your iPhone and iPod Touch has never been easier
Downloading YouTube videos to your computer has long been possible via third party software, but it just got a whole lot easier. YouTube recently began rolling out a new “click to download” feature that allows users to download YouTube clips directly to their iPhone of iPod Touch. The feature is still in limited release, and videos with this capability will have a “Click to Download” option located directly beneath the video player. The videos are saved in H.264 encoded .mp4 format, and once you select to automatically open the files in iTunes, they will download directly into your iTunes library, ready to be transfered onto your iPhone or iPod the next time you sync up your device.
Don’t get too excited, though, because you wont be able to load up your iPhone or iPod with music videos and clips of cat’s falling down just yet. YouTube is rolling out this feature extremely slowly, and it remains to be seen just how many of YouTube’s millions of videos will have this functionality. So far, Barack Obama’s YouTube ChangeDotGov channel appears to be the only way to currently check out the new “click to download” feature, but hopefully more videos will soon have the option.
The ease with which users can transfer videos from YouTube onto their iPhones or iPods highlights just how important iTunes is for Apple in the ongoing battle for digital hub supremacy. The popularity of the iPod is such that almost everybody with an MP3 player already has iTunes installed on their computer, giving Apple a significant advantage when it comes to seamlessly transferring content onto portable devices from the web.
