Cisco has invested an undisclosed amount in Digitalsmiths, a video indexing, analysis and publishing technology provider based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. According to the start-up, its indexing technology process each frame of video with proprietary algorithms including facial recognition, scene classification, and object recognition and assign that information to a unique time-coded index. The investment from Cisco follows a prior $12 million Series B round announced in November 2008.

Digitalsmiths said it had caught the attention of the Cisco Media Solutions Group, which at CES launched its Entertainment Operating System for the media and entertainment industry. Cisco has also said it would target consumer-focused companies for acquisitions.
