Well, the new Office Communication Server -OCS R2 is due to be released next Tuesday (3 Feb 2009). I know that everyone has been waiting for this release – well maybe not everyone, but certainly quite a few have who I have talked to over the past few months.

So what makes this OCS R2 so unique when compared with Windows Server R2 or Exchange 2007 SP1?  Well, those updated products did not have any of their corresponding exam(s) updated.  The 70-638: MCTS: Office Communications Server 2007, Configuring exam now covers the new features included with R2.  Quite a nice achievement!  There are some significant additions and updates to OCS product that do warrant a new exam.

There are some invaluable resources available to help you prepare for this exam. The first of these resources is the Microsoft Learning site http://www.microsoft.com/learning/ocs2007/default.mspx    The second is the actual exam preparation site  http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exams/70-638.mspx.

What makes this test so unique is that most of the R2 releases and major service packs do not get a new test -the old one continues to be the most current.  Think of Exchange Server 2007 SP1 – there are a lot of important changes in the product that could probably warrant a new test.

At any rate – if you have not taken the 70-638 exam – wait until you get some experience with OCS R2 before attempting this one.
