If you don’t buy into the populist view that Vista should be reviled, then you may be interested in the nearly ready SP2 version. Microsoft has released an almost final version of SP2 to its testing community, reports PC World.
The last SP2 beta was released to the public in December. With this release, SP2 is on track to be done and available within the next month to six weeks — though the usually-right Malaysian blog TechARP says SP2 will be out in April or May.
Vista SP2 hopes to show the world that Vista is a speedy OS. The update will include nearly 700 fixes and a tool designed to recover hard disk space from earlier versions of Vista. In addition, the update includes the supposedly faster, better, Windows Search 4.0 ( but before you believe that, please read Microsoft Subnet blogger Glenn Weadock’s not-so-impressed review of the new search tool). The revised desktop OS will also support Blu-Ray recording, Bluetooth 2.1, simplified Wi-Fi connections, DirectX improvements for gamers and a few other features.
In the meantime, if Windows 7 is more your thing, beware that on Tuesday, Microsoft will be sending fake updates to Windows 7 users in order to test its update system, reports Computerworld. The updates won’t change features, merely copy over existing files with the same version of the file. Users will be asked to update these files, but must take action to accept the updates.
