For the first time in 6 years, Mac sales took a dip downwards
Investment firm Piper Jaffray released a report earlier this week showing that recent data indicates that Mac sales are declining on a year to year basis for the first time in 6 years. Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray, anticipates that Apple will sell approximately 2.1 million Macs during the current quarter, a slight decline from the 2.3 million Macs Apple sold during the second quarter of 2008. Declining Mac sales, however, shouldn’t be too much of a reason for Apple to worry. For one thing, 2.1 million in Mac sales is in line with analyst estimates, and the fact that Apple has been able to maintain robust Mac sales in this economic climate should be seen as a positive. Second, the report indicates that Mac sales are on pace to decline, but its very possible that strong international sales might be able to pick up the slack for somewhat lackluster US sales. Third, it’s
important to remember that everything is relative. In other words, it’s unrealistic to expect Mac sales to continuously increase quarter after quarter with no aberration as various factors outside of Apple’s control, such as the economy, often come into play. The reality is that compared to other PC vendors, Apple is performing quite brilliantly. Sure, sales might be down, but what isn’t down these days?
I suppose it was inevitable that Apple would eventually experience some of the economic repercussions that have already caused layoffs at a number of tech companies, and all things considered, Apple has proven more than capable of withstanding these trying economic times better than most. Remember, a number of tech heavyweights have either already reported, or are foreseeing millions in losses. Lastly, if rumored reports of an updated iMac and Mac Mini in the next few months are accurate, Apple should be back on track by next quarter.
